Darts is not just a game that is played at the pub between friends, it is a professional sport with clubs in fifty-four countries. But it is also one of the only sports with two professional circuits and two world championships.
This situation began in 1994 when a group of players left the British Darts Organisation and formed the Professional Darts Council. They did this because they wanted darts to receive more television coverage and they made a deal with Sky television.
However, most of the best players stayed on the original circuit and it is generally recognised that the world’s most important darts event is the Embassy World Championship which is held in a country club in Surrey, England in January.
These days there are ten countries represented in the Men’s event and five in the Women’s. One of the favourites to win nowadays is Dutchman, Raymond Barnevelt. He was the first non-British person to win the championship title in 1999.
