Cricket is a very popular summer sport in the UK. It is mainly a sport for men but there are some female teams today. Children learn to play cricket at school. Families play cricket on the beach during the summer holidays. There are teams in most villages and towns around the country. There are cricket matches everywhere around the country.
Cricket is a very slow game. A cricket match usually lasts a whole day. Many foreigners find it boring because they don’t understand the game.
There are two teams with eleven players. The teams play on a cricket 'pitch', a big grassy field. In the centre of the pitch is the 'wicket'. This is a long piece of grass with three sticks or 'stumps' at each end. A player with a bat stands in front of each of the stumps. A bowler throws a ball and tries to knock down the stumps. The batsman hits the ball as hard as possible and runs to the opposite wicket. The aim of the game is to get more runs than the opposing team.
Today many countries around the world have national cricket teams. The main countries are England, Australia, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, South Africa, New Zealand, Zimbabwe, Bangladesh and the West Indies. The game developed in these countries when they were part of the British Empire.
There are many international matches today. The most important are called Test Matches. They oppose two national teams and they last five days.
